Jargon

NTB – Norfolke Trayned Bandes

RA– Roundhead Association

KA- Kings Army

ECWS – English Civil War Society – the umbrella organisation for the King’s Army and the Roundhead Association.

Equus‘ – How you pronounce ECWS.

Plastic campsite – Camping for people who do not have canvas tents. People involved in Living History will often have tents that are appropriate to the period.

LH – Living History – People involved in living history aim to present an accurate picture of life during the civil war era. Skills can cover an enormous range: spinning, weaving, cooking, laundry, mathematics, making clothes, blacksmith, coin making, demonstrating the kit and equipment of a typical soldier, etc. You may be amazed what areas your own interests lead you to research and eventually demonstrate. People doing living history must be dressed in appropriate costume for the period, but it is sometimes possible to borrow kit from other members of the regiment.

Warning Order – Information about an upcoming muster which will be sent to all members of the NTB and any other regiments also involved in the event.

Muster – an event – often, but not always a battle.

Major Muster – There will usually be 3 or 4 major Masters each year. A major muster will always involve a large number of regiments, and combat. Expect cannon and horse troopers as well as the regular pike and musket regiments.

RIE – Regimental Invitational Event – A smaller event organised by a single regiment. As numbers may be limited, a regiment can only go if they are specifically invited. Fyvie castle 2024

‘Have a care!’ – A shouted warning by the officer of a cannon crew or group of musketeers. It means they are about to fire. They won’t fire if they know you are in range, but there is always the possibility that you are concealed by a dip in the ground, a tree in their line of sight etc. If this is the case, then you have just about enough time to fling yourself flat on the ground. That cannon maybe firing nothing more dangerous than a ball of grass, but a compacted ball of grass can still hit pretty hard at short range.

CoS – Committee of Safetie – This is the governing body of the Roundhead Association.

CoW – Council of Warre – the governing body of the King’s Army.

King of the Ring – A competition between pikeman. Essentially, a number of pikeman from various regiments struggle to be the last person remaining inside a large rope circle. Contestants can combine forces in any combination they like. Anyone pushed out of the Ring is eliminated. Anyone losing control of their pike is eliminated. Anyone acting in an unsafe manner is eliminated. The last person left in the ring is the winner. 2024 created a new record, by being the first year to have a female winner. She was duely awarded the title Queen of the Ring.
